Here is the first of three files containing the pictures from the trip to
Cleveland over Easter. The first picture is the fuselage in the workshop with
our new I mean old engine. All the plywood on the fuselage is there for test purposes
and not for the real firewall.
This picture is the fuselage with all the built extra's at this time with my two oldest
children getting a little stick time.
Jim! As you can see I didn't get the second picture! My outgoing email keeps bouncing
back at me, so I can't contact you right now. Please send it again?....... I just love
reliable ISP service. - Doug
This last picture is of me (the guy in front) and Dad
(who let him in the pilots seat?)
getting some stick time of our own. I can tell already that getting into the
pilots seat with Dad around is not going to be easy.
I will give you an additional update following this weekends building sessions as Dad
is coming to Dayton to help varnish the wings!

The Hatz page gets better and better, the pictures of the building process are a good idea!
Just a quick note. I am just back from the Cleveland plant of the Harkema Hatz
Works with pictures. Dad and I took the Horners' advice for motivation, and put
all the parts made so far in Cleveland together to see what we had. Son of a gun it
is starting to look like an airplane. We all got some taxi practice in the driveway!
I will send you the pictures when they get back from processing. I was planning on
scanning them and sending them to you electronically. Is there a specific way I should
send them to you for ease
of posting?
A further update will follow with the pictures!
30 Mar 1998:
My name is Jim Harkema and I am building Hatz s/n 513 with my father. I am building the
wings in Dayton, OH where I live, and Dad had the fuselage and tail in Cleveland, OH
where he lives. We sure hope the pieces fit when the time comes to assemble (ha ha).
S/N 513 is making slow progress even though Dad and I are working on it together, the
job just keeps getting in the way, not to mention the kids activity schedule. The fuselage
is welded and on the gear, cabane struts completed, seats installed, and the tail close to
completion. The center section is finished (with the larger fuel tank) and the top wings
ready for varnish. We just purchased an O-320E2D last week and should begin the engine
mount when we visit Dad over Easter break. We began actual construction late in '93 so
you can see we are not setting any records!
There are a number of significant changes being made to the airplane that you may want to
investigate. We raised the gear 3 inches and the top wing 2 inches. We added a ground
adjustable horizontal stab ala Acro Sport II. Probably the best way to find out about
these changes is to attend either the National Biplane Flyin at Bartlesville OK or
Oshkosh as the Hatz Nutz get together at both events and share ideas and changes.
